wildlife tea Ballina Koalas Threatened by Pacific Highway Stage 10 Upgrade

In this short video produced by IFAW, a critical colony of over 200 koalas in Ballina, New South Wales, is at risk of extinction from the Pacific Highway.

Stage 10, from Richmond River to Wardell, deviates from the existing highway through the Blackwall Range. This is a wildlife hotspot, home not only to this nationally-significant koala population but to over 30 other threatened species included the rare long-nosed potoroo.

Population modeling shows that if Stage 10 goes ahead as planned, it will bring about the extinction of these koalas within the next 25 years. The route will also impact upon an Indigenous Protected Area, destroying sacred Aboriginal sites and scar trees.

Yet, despite this, the New South Wales Government gave the green light. Over 50,000 people from around Australia and the world pleaded with Environment Minister Greg Hunt to halt the highway and save the koalas. He responded by giving an amber light insisting on further studies to prove that it will not cause extinction of these koalas. We are concerned that the NSW Government is continuing down this route regardless, without any Plan B. A decision will be made soon.
